Sunbirds Sweep Urban Knights In Return Home

FRESNO, Calif. – Feeding off of the home crowd filled with alumni, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (6-4 overall, 5-1 PacWest) swept the Academy of Art Urban Knights (3-12 overall, 2-4 PacWest) Saturday inside the Special Events Center.

Makena Ogas delivered kills on each of her first five swings and helped the Sunbirds overcome numerous five points deficits throughout the afternoon with her 13 kills, coming back in each set to the delight of the home crowd.

Freshman Cambria Waites had a career-performance in support with 9 kills and the outside/right side duo combined to hit .500 on the match on 34 total attempts.

The Sunbirds were chasing three points early before Ogas began her run and the Fresno Pacific found its rhythm.

The first set changed momentum multiple times before FPU tied the game at 14. The Sunbirds scored 7 of the next 9 points to take control of the set and gain a 1-0 lead behind a 25-17 score line.

ArtU grabbed hold of the lead firmly in the second set as well, building a 5-point advantage, but the second set turned into the most offensive set of the season with FPU tallying 18 kills on the way to a 25-23 win.

Waites took over in the third set, as FPU overcame another five-point hole, rallying behind six kills from the freshman. Chloe Melis added a pair of her three solo blocks while Madison Girnius and Ogas also joined the party on the block.

Three straight blocks helped FPU surge past ArtU and the Sunbirds wrapped up the match with a 25-20 win.

FPU delivered their highest attack percentage of the season with a .371 in the second. The overall attack percentage was .310, the second-best performance of the year and best at home, next to the .340 FPU hit at Hawai'i Pacific last week.

The Sunbirds will have a few days off before returning to the road, traveling to take on Holy Names and Dominican in the Bay Area next weekend.
