Mike MacNeill

  • Title
    Head Coach
Mike MacNeill's first season back in his home town was successful in every measure. The Sunbird volleyball team made its biggest one year leap in program history in 2022, leading FPU to a 2nd place PacWest finish by winning 15 games. Fresno Pacific had three all-conference performers acknowledged after the season.

Under MacNeill's guidance, the Sunbirds snapped losing streaks against each of the Southern California rivals, with each of the four streaks ending after four years.

MacNeill joined the Sunbirds from Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas. In his first season with the Blue Jays, the team went 26-9 with a 19-6 conference record. They received votes nationally while being ranked third in blocks, eighth in service aces, 10th in digs, and 10th in assists in the country. The Blue Jays finished last season with a second-place finish in the KCAC, as MacNeil wrapped up his time at Tabor with a 43-21 record.

Before Tabor, MacNeill spent three seasons at the helm of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. In those three seasons, the team went 52-25. MacNeill changed the culture of the program immediately, helping the team elevate their grade point average from 2.7 to 3.45 in his first season with the group.

The Wildcats' best season under MacNeill came in 2018, as they went 20-4. They earned a piece of the Red River Athletic Conference regular season championship and won the conference tournament on their way to the NAIA Championship Playoffs. MacNeil was named the conference’s Coach of the Year, as the team ranked 14th in the country in hitting percentage, 20th in blocks per game, and was inside the top 50 in assists per game.

MacNeill had tremendous success as a player at California Baptist, having played in four NAIA national championship matches. The Lancers won the national championship in 2010 and 2011.

MacNeill played as an outside hitter and libero, accomplishing many things in his time with the Lancers. In 2011, he led the country in aces per game. MacNeil set the single-match record in service aces against BYU with eight. He set single-season records in services aces per set (.52), total services aces (63), and digs (203) during the 2009 season. In 2008, he set the single-match record in hitting percentage against Holy Names, hitting .800 for the match.
