Sunbirds Downed in First Road Trip

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Sunbirds went on the road for the first time in 2022 to compete in the Inlands Empire Classic, starting with two games on Saturday. In the first matchup against Redlands, they fell 22-7, followed by a tough matchup with Whittier College in the second game where they fell 12-8.

In the first game, Redlands got on the board first, but William Green continued his hot start to the season with an answer just 14 seconds later.

After two more Redlands goals followed by a second from Green to make it 3-2 with 3:54 remaining, the Bulldogs took control, scoring eight unanswered between the end of the first period and the beginning of the third period to go up 11-3.

Green continued to be a problem for the hosts, scoring his third and fourth goals of the contest in the third period, followed by a goal from Eugenio Maldonado.

Redlands responded with a 9-2 run, with FPU goals from Blake Johnson and Forrest Gray, to close out the contest.

In game two against Whittier, the Sunbirds went on top first thanks to a goal from Jacob Renevier.

The Poets answered with a goal of their own to take the game into the second quarter tied 1-1.

Eight of the game's 20 total goals came in the second period, five coming from the Poets and three coming from Green, who had two, and Pietro Cattano.

Down 6-4, Thilo Popp was able to put one in the net to close the gap to just one goal. Whittier answered, and the two teams continued to trade goals to go into the final quarter at 9-7. Cattano scored his second goal of the game in the period and Maldonaldo had his second goal of the two games.

The difference in the contest came in the final eight minutes when the Poets were able to score three while holding the Sunbirds scoreless until the final six seconds when Gray score to make it 12-8.

The Sunbirds will close out their time in Redlands on Sunday with two matchups, starting with Occidental at 9 a.m., followed by a meeting with Chapman University at 3:30 p.m.
