Sunbirds Celebrate Seniors, Play Wild Match against Otters

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team celebrated the careers of Alexandria Jasso, Amanda Briscoe, Amy Zaninovich, and Dani Chastain before their match against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at Sunnyside High School. The Sunbirds were dominant early and kept pace with the Otters late, but the visitors found just enough offense to squeak past the Birds 11-10.

QUOTABLE
"Each of these women has been a blessing to the program. We will miss each of them,  but we are excited to see the lives they create for themselves in the future. They have all grown in confidence and maturity and will be such strong leaders in their next phases in life. Thank you for your commitment and dedication these past years." - head coach Bryan Suhovy.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sunbirds had four goals in the first quarter, with Tatum Benson and Briscoe each scoring one, and Zaninovich with two, to take the early lead.
  • The Sunbirds played well defensively in the second quarter, which was highlighted by another goal from Benson to put the Sunbirds up 5-2 going into the half.
  • After a 4-0 run from the Otters at the beginning of the third quarter, Benson put the Sunbirds back into contention with her third goal, tying the game 6-6.
  • Rosemary Chapman put the ball into the top corner before the end of the quarter to keep the game close.
  • In the fourth quarter, Chapman and Emily Lopez-Ibarra each put up goals in the top right corner of the net as FPU remained in striking distance of the Otters.
  • Camryn Berra scored from long range for the Sunbirds, but there wasn't enough time left to tie the match.
