Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Sunbirds End Home Stand With Loss To Eagles

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team played their third home game of the season when they hosted Biola University on Saturday at Sunnyside High School. After a high-scoring effort from both teams, the Sunbirds fell short to the Eagles 14-8.

QUOTABLE

"We came out strong and executed the first half as we planned. The third quarter we got tired and started making some small mistakes. I feel the girls played well and worked hard. We just struggled to recover from those fundamental mistakes we allowed to happen. Right now we need to continue to grow and improve at every opportunity." – head coach Bryan Suhovy

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first quarter, Rosemary Chapman and Tatum Benson both found the back of the net with assists from Amy Zaninovich. Bella Alcazar would give the Sunbirds a lead with a third goal, which was assisted by Emily Lopez-Ibarra.
  • In the second quarter, Dani Chastain put up a pass to Alexandria Jasso which resulted in a goal for FPU.
  • Hannah Walker deposited a close-range shot to give the Sunbirds five points to start the third quarter. After stealing the ball from the Eagles, Benson would go on to score again for the Sunbirds. Jasso would pass the ball to Zaninovich to score their seventh point of the game before Zaninovich would score one from long range to close the third quarter, making it a three-goal deficit for FPU heading to the final period.
  • The Eagles went on a 3-0 run in the fourth quarter, but solid defensive efforts from Benson and Walker kept the Sunbirds in contention until the final whistle.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Zaninovich made three steals to lead the Sunbirds defensive efforts. She also finished with four points thanks to two goals and two assists.
  • FPU won two sprints and made a total of thirteen shots and eleven steals throughout the game to keep pressure on the Eagles.
  • Camryn Berra made eight saves for FPU in the cage.
