Sunbirds Split to Open PacWest Play

HILO, Hawaii – The Fresno Pacific baseball team took the field after two weeks off on Friday to open PacWest play against Hawaii Hilo. They took the first game 10-0 behind a complete-game shutout from Garrett Cooper on the mound but fell 6-5 in extra innings in game two.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first inning from both teams, the Sunbirds opened things up in the second inning with six runs on six hits.
  • Andrue Lackey started things off with a leadoff double, followed by a one-out single from Jared Aguilar that moved him to third base.
  • After Kyle Willman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Cole Yoshida drove in Lackey and Aguilar with a single down the right-field line.
  • Khalid Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases back up with one out, and then Andrew Valdez cleared the bases with a two-out triple to make it 6-0.
  • Neither team scored in the third inning, but the Sunbirds were able to extend their lead in the fourth when Aguilar drove in Matt McGrady with a two-out single to left field.
  • Cooper was able to sit down Hilo in order in the fourth and fifth innings to keep the Vulcans off the board, FPU added two more runs in the top of the sixth after Lackey hit his second home run of the season and brought McGrady in to score with him.
  • The Sunbirds added their final run in the top of the eighth inning on a single from Shane Pursell to centerfield that scored Trent Greene, who hit a pinch-hit double earlier in the inning.
  • Cooper was able to get the final six outs of the game in the eighth and ninth innings to earn the complete-game shutout win.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Cooper struck out seven and only walked two in his nine innings of work
  • Lackey went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's, two runs, a home run and a double.
  • Auilar finished 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless start, the Vulcans jumped on the board with two runs in the third inning.
  • In the top of the third, Johnson was able to hit a two-out triple down the right-field line, but the Sunbirds were unable to bring him across.
  • FPU had Ben Jungbluth on second base with just one out in the fifth inning, but were unable to bring him in, and the Vulcans took advantage in their half of the inning, scoring one more to make it 3-0.
  • Hilo was able to extend its lead in the sixth with two more runs to make it 5-0.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, the Sunbirds began their rally with a leadoff single from Johnson to left field.
  • Tommy Rover followed with a single of his own to left field to put runners on first and second with no outs.
  • With one out, Johnson and Khalid were able to pull off the double steal to move to second and third, and with two outs, Lackey drove in his third run of the day to make it 5-2.
  • Jaylin Rodriguez was able to sit the Vulcans down without giving up a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Sunbirds went into the ninth down three runs.
  • Jungbluth opened the inning with a walk, and Damien Holmes came in to pinch run for the catcher.
  • A double from Aguilar advanced Holmes to third base with no outs, and then a single from Johnson with one out made it a one-run game.
  • Rover followed that up with a double that advanced Johnson to third, and after a walk by Andrew Valdez, McGrady was able to bring in Johnson as the tying run with two outs.
  • Matt Stearns came in the game to pitch in the bottom of the ninth and was able to sit down Hilo in order to send the game into extra innings.
  • The Sunbirds went down in order in the top of the 10th inning, and the Vulcans were able to utilize some small ball and manufacture the game-winning run.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Johnson went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs, two RBI's a walk and his fourth triple of the season.
  • Rover, Jungbluth and Agilar each had a double in the game.
  • Aguilar struck out five in five innings of work on the mound.
  • Rodriguez struck out four in three innings of relief.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Blue and Orange will close out the series against Hilo on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m. PST.
