Sunbirds Split Four-Game Set With Urban Knights

FRENSO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team closed out its four-game set with Academy of Art on Saturday, falling 11-1 and splitting the series 2-2
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Urban Knights put together a big first inning, scoring three runs to take a quick 3-0 lead.
  • The Sunbirds were able to load the bases with no outs for the second time in the series, but they were only able to come away with one run.
  • It started with a leadoff double from Khalid Johnson, followed by a single from Tommy Rover to move him to third.
  • Andrew Valdez drew a walk on the next at-bat to load the bases, and with one out, Jared Aguilar was able to bring in Johnson with a sacrifice fly.
  • Garrett Cooper was hit by a pitch to load the bases again with two outs, but FPU was unable to plate another run.
  • Art U added another run in the top of the second and then two more in the third to take a commanding 6-1 lead.
  • The Sunbirds had a chance in the bottom of the third after Aguilar hit a two-out single, followed by a ground-rule double to put runners on second and third, but the Urban Knights were able to shut down the Sunbirds offense yet again.
  • Art U scored for the fourth straight inning, adding two more runs in the fourth to make it an 8-1 game.
  • The Sunbirds were finally able to hold Art U to a scoreless frame in the fifth, but the Urban Knights were able to sit FPU down in order in the bottom half of the inning.
  • It was a three-run inning for Art U in the top of the sixth to make it 11-1, but the Sunbirds were unable to capitalize with runners on first and second in the bottom half of the inning.
  • After a scoreless seventh inning, FPU got their first 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth, and in the bottom half, the Sunbirds started with a leadoff single from Shane Pursell who advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out.
  • After a walk by Cooper to put runners on first and second, Art U was able to get out of the jam by getting the final two outs.
  • Gino Helmuth entered the game on the mound for FPU to start the ninth and was able to get a 1-2-3 inning, but the Urban Knights answered in the bottom of the ninth to sit the Sunbirds down in order and get the series split.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Johnson went 2-for-4 in the game with a double and scored the Sunbirds' only run.
  • Cooper added a double in a 1-for-2 day at the plate.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Blue and Orange will host Concordia in PacWest Conference play on Friday and Saturday. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2 p.m., with Saturday's doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m.
