Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Sunbirds Lose First Two in Tina Finali Invitational

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team opened up the Tina Finali Invitational on Friday, falling to No. 24 Cal State Northridge 11-6 in their first contest, followed by a tight 10-9 loss to Austin College in the afternoon game.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sunbirds were able to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead after Amy Zaninovich opened the game with a goal, followed by two from Tatum Benson.
  • CSUN was able to score three in the last four minutes of the opening period and make it 3-3 after the first quarter.
  • CSUN continued their run with two goals to opened the second quarter, but Madison Jacques made it a one-goal game, and the Sunbirds took the one-point deficit into halftime.
  • The Matadors answered right back to start the second half, scoring three unanswered to take a four-goal lead.
  • They were able to add one more to open up the fourth quarter, but it was quickly answered by Zaninovich to make it 9-5.
  • After a CSUN goal made it 10-5, Benson scored her third goal of the game to make it 10-6. But a Matador goal with 1:34 to go in the game put it out of reach and gave CSUN the win.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Benson scored three goals in the contest on six shots with a steal.
  • Zaninovich added two goals to go with one steal.
  • Courtney Belliotti had a team-high three steals in the game.
  • Camryn Berra finished with 10 saves.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded goal to start after an opening goal from Emily Lopez-Ibarra.
  • Rosemary Chapman gave the Sunbirds a 2-1 lead in the first quarter, but the Kangaroos were able to add two to close out the quarter and take a 3-2 lead into the second period.
  • Lopez-Ibarra, Zaninovich and Jacques scored three goals in a row to open the second quarter, giving the Sunbirds a 5-3 lead with 4:33 to go in the half.
  • Austin was able to get one goal back, but Jacques answered quickly, keeping the FPU lead at two goals.
  • The Kangroos were able to score three straight goals to take a one-goal lead, but another one from Chapman with 10 seconds to go in the half sent the game into halftime tied 6-6.
  • Austin took a two-goal lead in the third quarter, but a goal from Zaninovich cut the deficit to one heading into the final quarter.
  • Hannah Walker was able to tie things up in the fourth quarter, but Austin was able to score one more with 4:41 to go, and it would ultimately be the game-winner for the Kangaroos.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Zaninovich, Chapman and Jacques each scored two goals in the game.
  • Chapman added two steals to her tally, as well as Lopez-Ibarra and Natalie Kisling.
UP NEXT

The Blue and Orange will continue the Tina Finali Invitational on Saturday with a matchup against California Lutheran at 9:15 a.m., followed by a contest against Chapman at 3:30 p.m.
