RONHERT PARK, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University baseball team traveled to Rohnert Park, Calif. for game one of a three-game series against Sonoma State on Friday afternoon.
Garrett Cooper pitched six strong innings, and the Sunbirds bats came alive in the sixth inning and went on to take it 4-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Andrew Valdez drove in Kahalid Johnson with a single to center field that put the Birds up 1-0 in the third inning.
- The Seawolves answered with a run in the bottom half of the third and plated two more in the fourth.
- Tommy Rover and Andrue Lackey were hit by pitches, and Donte Valdez walked to load the bases with two outs in the sixth.
- Jared Aguilar came up clutch, driving a single into right-center field that brought in Rover and Lackey to tie the game 3-3.
- Valdez scurried home on a wild pitch, giving the Sunbirds a 4-3 lead.
- Matt Stearns came on in relief of Garrett Cooper, shutting down the Seawolves over the final three innings while racking up six strikeouts to pick up the save.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Cooper hurled six innings, picking up six strikeouts while allowing four hits and three earned runs in what was a solid outing.
- Cooper and Stearns combined for 12 strikeouts.
- A. Valdez was the only Sunbird with multiple hits, finishing the game 2-for-4.
- Aguilar had the big hit, driving in a team-high two runs.
- As a team, the Blue and Orange drew four walks.
