Person Jr. Scores Career-High 21 Points in Sunbirds Win over Sharks

HONOLULU – Darrin Person Jr. continues to impress in his first full season with the Fresno Pacific University men's basketball team, as the Fresno Native poured in a career-high 21 points in a 73-56 victory for the Sunbirds over Hawaii Pacific on Sunday night.

"Just really proud of the maturity of our team. These games on this kind of condensed travel, are won by discipline off the floor. They made every decision we need them to win in the last 24 hours - sleep, recovery, hydration, focus, and preparation. That's a huge testament to our collective leadership and emotional intelligence. Another good all-around defensive performance, led by Alex Ferguson. On the other side of the ball, Darrin Person Jr continues his hot streak, and Garrett Cook provides an immense lift for us off the bench. HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sunbirds and Sharks were tied when Person Jr. scored a layup to go up 10-8 nearing the five-minute mark. 
  • The Birds trailed by one when back-to-back 3-pointers followed by two layups from Person Jr. as a part of an 8-2 run that put the team up 22-16 with 9:07 to go in the first half. 
  • Nate Kendricks, Marten Maide, and Jelani Watson-Gayle made shots to go on a 6-0 run that put FPU up 10 with 4:12 left in the half. 
  • The Sunbirds led the Sharks 34-25 at halftime. 
  • The Birds opened the second half with an 11-4 run to go up 45-31. 
  • The Sharks crawled back into the game and cut the Sunbird lead to nine with 6:21 remaining in the game.
  • A 3-pointer from Kendricks capped an 11-0 run that put FPU up by 20 with 2:14 left. 
  • The Sunbirds kept their lead and took the game 73-56. 

STATS FROM THE GAME 

  • Person Jr. led everyone with his career-high 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting while adding seven rebounds. 
  • A.J. Kirby pulled down a game-high nine rebounds with six points, three assists, and a steal.
  • Cook knocked down five 3-pointers on his way to a season-high 16 points, leading an FPU bench that scored 22 points. 
  • Kendricks went 5-for-6 from the field, leading to 12 points. 
  • The Sunbirds forced 14 turnovers and scored 16 points off turnovers.
