Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sunbirds Fall At Point Loma In Final Game Before Christmas Break

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's basketball team (4-7 overall, 0-5 PacWest) capped off its PacWest road trip on Monday with a 66-61 loss to Point Loma (6-7 overall, 4-2 PacWest) before taking time off for the holiday break.

"It's becoming a bit of a theme for us in the last handful of weeks to be in a one-possession game in the fourth quarter and not pull out the win," head coach Tim Beauregard said. "There are not a lot of pivots to make; get recharged during the break and come back striving to be a little bit better for the rest of the league."

The first quarter was a stagnant one for both sides, with the Sunbirds leading 8-3 with just 2:13 left in the period. The Sea Lions were able to close out the quarter on an 8-3 run, and the game was tied 11-11 going into the second period.

A quick start for Point Loma gave them an 18-11 lead, but that is when Sara Lundqvist took over for the Sunbirds, knocking down three of her five total 3-pointers on three-straight possessions, followed by another from Joleen Corona with 3:29 to go in the half to cut the Sea Lion lead to just one point at 24-23. After a made jumper from Point Loma, Lundqvist went 1-of-2 from the line to give her seven points in the period, followed by her fourth 3-pointer in the quarter with 1:56 remaining to give her 10 points in the period and tie the game 27-27.

The Sea Lions were able to respond, taking a 32-29 lead into the break.

Point Loma opened the second half with an 11-5 run to take a nine-point lead just less than halfway through the period. The two teams would trade buckets, but a quick 5-0 run to close out the quarter gave the Sea Lions a 12-point lead with 10 minutes to play.

The Sunbirtds struck quick to open the final quarter, scoring a fast five points thanks to a layup from Rachel Berry and a 3-pointer from Anisa Rillo to make it a sevne-point Point Loma lead just a minute and a half into the period. After a layup from the Sea Lions gave them a nine-point lead, Lundqvist knocked down her fifth from behind the arc to make it 52-46 with just over seven minutes remaining in the contest.

The Point Loma lead hovered between seven and nine points before another long ball from Corona made it a four-point game with 4:32 to go. The Sea Lions, though, seemed to have an answer every time the Sunbirds tried to go on a run.

After being down eight with 3:44 left, the Sunbirds were able to widdle the lead down to just two points after two free throws from Julie Ramriez dropped with 37 seconds to go. It was free throws late, though, that haunted the Sunbirds while the Sea Lions converted theirs, and they were able to hang on to the win.

"We know we can bounce back from an ugly start to the conference. The route to do so is not hidden," Beauregard added. "We will continue to stay together and fight together to turn the corner and start putting together some wins. We look forward to bouncing back and finding better outcomes in the near future."

Lundqvist finished with a game and career-high 23 points on 5-of-8 shooting from behind the arc. Maesyn Rix pulled down 13 rebounds, and Bre Hurt scored eight points and added nine rebounds off the bench.

The Sunbirds will be off for 10 days before returning to Fresno for a matchup with Dominican on Dec. 30. Tip-off at the Special Events Center is set for 2 p.m.
