LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The FPU Sunbirds (3-23 overall, 0-8 WWPA) ended its 2022 campaign at the Wester Water Polo Association Championships on Saturday, falling to Concordia-Irvine (6-23 overall, 2-6 WWPA) 10-7 in the consolation round.
The Golden Eagles got things started with a quick goal 30 seconds into the contest. It was answered by
Thilo Popp a little over a minute later before CUI scored two more to take a 3-1 lead.
William Green was able to cut the deficit to one, but the Golden Eagles added one more with eight seconds to go to take a 4-2 lead into the second quarter.
Three quick goals from CUI to open the period made it 7-2, and they would take that lead into the break, keeping the Sunbirds off the board in the period. But FPU came out of halftime strong, scoring three goals from
Eugenio Maldonado,
Christian Clark and
Blake Johnson while holding CUI scoreless in the period to make it 7-5 with eight minutes remaining.
The Golden Eagles were able to get some cushion with two goals to open the final period, but
Thilo Popp wouldn't let them go away easily with a goal of his own and 2:15 left on the clock.
CUI responded to go back up four with 1:55 left, and Clark was able to add his second goal of the game with 39 seconds to go, but the Golden Eagles were able to hang on for the win.
