FRESNO, Calif.-Going to five sets for second consecutive match less than 24 hours apart, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (9-5 overall, 8-2 PacWest) fell to the rested Concordia-Irvine Golden Eagles (10-7 overall, 7-3 PacWest) Saturday afternoon in the Special Events Center.
The tempo of the match swayed drastically throughout the afternoon as both teams took turns putting up astronomical offensive numbers in the first two sets, splitting 25-13 and 14-25 decisions.
Fresno Pacific regained the lead in the match, rallying late in the third set to edge CUI 25-23 in set 3.
Set 4 proved the most dramatic, as neither team built a lead bigger than 3 until CUI forced a fifth set at 25-23.
The Sunbirds were able to take the early lead in set 5, but Concordia-Irvine scored 7 of the last 8 points to steal the match at 15-13.
Makena Ogas,
Corinne Acosta, and
Chloe Melis all had double-digit kills in the loss.
FPU will hit the road for three matches, beginning with a non-conference tilt on Tuesday against UC Merced.
The Sunbirds will be back at home when they host Azusa Pacific Saturday, October 21
st at 6:00 p.m. in the Special Events Center.
