Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Birds Come Up Short Against Aggies

DAVIS, Calif. – The Sunbirds hit the road again following their first home match in over four weeks to take on UC Davis in a Western Water Polo Association matchup on Sunday, falling short 19-5 to the second-place Aggies.

UC Davis came out firing early, scoring eight goals in the first and second periods before William Hoyle put the Sunbirds on the board with 1:34 to go before the half.

The Aggies added one more goal with just eight seconds before the break to take a 9-1 lead into halftime, but it was FPU who scored first in the second half thanks to Forrest Gray, who scored his first of two goals of the game less than a minute and a half into the third period.

After back-to-back goals from UC Davis extended their lead, Gray notched his second goal of the contest with 4:45 to go in the quarter.

The Aggies added two more goals before Thilo Popp scored his first goal of the game in the third quarter, but one more goal from UC Davis with 35 seconds to go gave the Aggies a 14-4 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

UC Davis didn't let up in the final quarter, outscoring the Sunbirds 5-1 in the period, with the lone FPU goal coming from Popp, his second of the game.

The Sunbirds will be back in action on Thursday when George Washington University comes to Fresno. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
