SAN RAFAEL, Calif.-While the formula has not been identical, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (8-4 overall, 7-1 PacWest) repeated their familiar balanced offensive approach in a four-set victory over the Dominican Penguins (0-14 overall, 0-7 PacWest) Saturday afternoon in the Conlan Center.
Fresno Pacific continued to spread the love offensively, engaging six different attackers, while the defense caused problems for their hosts. The formula has not been the exact same throughout the stretch in which the Sunbirds have won eight of nine, but it looked similar to the same approach that netted FPU's first victory in the same building a month ago.
"Sometimes you just have to take your win and run," Fresno Pacific head coach
Mike MacNeill said of the victory. "We've raised our expectations to always playing our best and I think we fell a little short of that today. But we rallied together and left this weekend 2-0 so I'm proud of this group."
After exchanging points over the first segment of the opening stanza, FPU began to pull away behind their defense. The Sunbirds forced a series of tough shots and attack errors from Dominican taking leads at 13-8 and 19-12 that caused timeouts to be taken by the hosts.
The Sunbirds closed out the set with six of the final nine points, winning the first stanza 25-16.
FPU jumped out to the early lead in set two when
Corinne Acosta won a joust at the net to force the DUC timeout at 6-3.
Acosta took over in the second set, powering FPU's attack to a seven point lead at 19-12.
FPU hit .321 in the 2
nd set as they forced 17 errors by Dominican in the first two sets.
After Dominican inched closer,
Makena Ogas earned a side out with an authoritative kill to earn set point before
Kaiessa Sounart closed the set at 25-17.
Dominican had its biggest lead of the afternoon at the beginning of the third set, taking a 16-13 advantage.
FPU's block helped even the set as
Kaiessa Sounart walled off an attempt to tie the frame at 16-16.
After jockeying throughout the next eight points, Acosta rolled a shot in away from the pin to take the lead at 21-20.
The teams traded points to 23, when FPU was able to create match point. Dominican was able to stave that off, scoring two points to earn a set point of their own.
But Ogas delivered a key kill and FPU earned its second match point at 26-25, leading to a timeout by the Penguins.
Dominican quickly flipped the script, scoring the next three points to steal the third set 28-26 and force a fourth set.
Fresno Pacific built a large lead in the fourth set after trading the first few points. The Sunbirds scored six straight points to take a 12-7 lead and extended the advantage from there.
The Sunbirds maintained the lead despite some more pressure from the Penguins and closed out the win with a 25-21 set four.
Makena Ogas led FPU with 14 kills while Acosta added 10.
Cambria Waites was next on FPU's leaderboard with 7 while
Madison Girnius tacked on 6 kills.
"Madison played great again today," MacNeill said of the individual contributions. "Makena and Corinne stayed aggressive from the pin."
Despite the powerful second set, FPU hit just .154 on the afternoon but buoyed their effort with another 20 block performance.
"We are looking to improve this week as we prepare for Point Loma and Concordia-Irvine," MacNeill added. "We turn our attention to our statement weekend, playing two top teams in our conference at home. It's going to be a fun week!"
The Sunbirds will be back at home next week with a second-place showdown against the Point Loma Sea Lions Friday night at 6 p.m. in the Special Events Center. FPU will also host Concordia-Irvine the following day, a 2 p.m. match, to complete the weekend.
