Sunbirds Win Overtime Thriller Over Chapman

POMONA, Calif. – The FPU men's water polo team (1-10, 0-2 WWPA) closed out its time in the Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday with a thrilling 16-15 eighth-period, sudden-death victory over Chapman (8-7) followed by a 25-5 loss against No. 6 Long Beach State (12-5).

Eugenio Maldonado put the 'Birds up 1-0 early in the first period against Chapman, but the Cougars were able to respond, scoring three straight to take a lead.

Thilo Popp was able to dent the net the make it 3-2 after the first quarter, and he was able to score another, alongside William Green and Blake Johnson to start the second quarter and give FPU a 5-3 lead.

The Cougars were able to go on a 3-0 run to regain the lead, but a goal from Green with just six seconds remaining sent the contest into the break tied 6-6.

The third quarter was the period of Blake Johnson, who scored three goals, alongside one freem Green, which allowed the Sunbirds to take a 10-9 lead into the final period of regulation. Chapman scored five goals in the final eight minutes, but goals from Green and Moaldonado, as well as two from Pietro Cattano, meant the contest would require extra time to decide the winner.

Maldonado opened the overtime period with his third goal of the contest before Champman was able to even things up. Things then moved into the sudden death period of extra time, where Maldonado scored the winner for the Sunbirds, his fourth of the game.

In the second and final contest of the tournament, LBSU was able to jump out to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter with FPU goals coming from Popp and Maldonado.

LBSU continued to ride the hot hand, going on a 13-1 run through the second and third quarters with a Sunbird goal coming from Forrest Gray.

LBSU was able to outscore the Sunbirds 4-2 in the final period with goals coming from Cattano and Christian Clark for FPU.

The Sunbirds will be back in action on Thursday when they continue the long road trip with a matchup at Biola. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
