FPU Baseball Drops Two, Turns to Focus to Saturday

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team dropped both ends of a PacWest Conference doubleheader on Thursday, falling 8-6 in 11 innings of the opener before ending up on the wrong side of a 2-1 finale against Holy Names.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A sac fly got the Hawks on the board first in the top of the second inning, but the Sunbirds answered with two runs in the home half to take the early lead.
  • Haden Haynes' pinch hit sac fly extended the Sunbird advantage to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The fifth inning got away from the home team, as Holy Names plated five runs to take a 6-3 lead.
  • Andrue Lackey doubled home a run in the home half, and Angel Flores came away with a sac fly to cut the deficit to one.
  • Isaac Gonzalez lined out to left in the eighth, enough to plate Michael Warkentin from third and tie the game at 6-6.
  • A two-run double off the bat of Colton Combs gave the Hawks an 8-6 lead in the top of the 11th, and the Sunbirds were unable to answer.
  • Holy Names struck first again in the nightcap, when a single up the middle turned into the first run off Tyler Rumbaugh in his last 12 innings.
  • Gavin Vangronigen's sac fly in the bottom of the second inning tied the game at 1-1.
  • The Hawks came away with the game-winning hit in the top of the sixth, and FPU was hit with their second loss of the day.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Warkentin provided a 3-for-5 day atop the Sunbird order in the opener, while Lackey and shortstop Jack Foote each picked up two hits.
  • Esteban Lizaola took the hard luck loss for FPU after tossing five impressive innings of relief work.
  • Aguilar and Lackey came away with four of the Sunbirds' six hits in the back end of Thursday's twin bill.
  • Rumbaugh nearly went the distance on the mound, going 6.2 innings with six strikeouts.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Lackey has reached base in 16 straight games.
  • Aguilar leads the team with 52 total bases.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds will head to the Bay Area to wrap up the series with Holy Names on Saturday, with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 2:00 p.m. FPU needs to win both games to force a play-in game for the NorCal Pod Championship.
