Sunbirds Sweep Hawks to Claim PacWest NorCal Pod

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific volleyball team traveled to Oakland, Calif. to face Holy Names in a match to determine the PacWest Conference NorCal Pod Winner on Wednesday afternoon. The Sunbirds Swept the Hawks 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-16) to secure the best record in the NorCal Pod.

  • "What I'm most impressed with is our ability to stay focused and on task. We accomplished our goals of being undefeated at home and winning the NorCal Pod. Our mantra has been to pursue and persist toward our goals, and we have done just that. We return all 10 of our student-athletes who have the ability to play multiple positions. HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The opening set saw the Sunbirds gain a slight 5-4 lead, as Corinne Acosta had a kill that sparked a 7-1 run that lifted the team to a 12-5 advantage.
  • An ace from Chantel Montayre secured the first set for the 'Birds 25-18.
  • The Hawks gained an early 3-1 lead in the second set before the Blue and Orange exploded for a 10-3 run.
  • The Sunbirds used a 6-2 fueled by kills from Catie Speas and Anastassiya Barakhoyeva to take the second set 25-16.
  • In the final set, the 'Birds hustled to an 11-4 lead capped by a kill from Izzy Bandy.
  • Makena Ogas had a kill that put the Blue and Orange up 20-9, as they'd go on to take the third set 25-16.  
STATS FROM THE MATCH: 
  • Acosta was stellar for the Sunbirds, leading everyone with 14 kills while hitting .389. Acosta completed her double-double with 13 kills.
  • Ogas accumulated a .353 hitting percentage, converting on nine kills.
  • Izzy Bandy had another efficient match, hitting .467 on seven kills.
  • Speas and Lauren Ornbaun ran the offense well, as Speas led the with 17 assists while Ornbaun added 12.
  • Montayre led the way defensively with 15 digs.
  • The Sunbirds were tough at the net, blocking 11 attacks from the Hawks.
  • The Blue and Orange held the Hawks to a .084 hitting percentage for the match.
