Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

‘Birds Freeze Penguins Again to Stay Unbeaten in League

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team defeated Dominican for the third time in five days on Saturday evening, picking up an 83-75 victory on the road. The Sunbirds improve to 7-0 in PacWest Conference action and remain in the mix for an NCAA Postseason appearance.

QUOTABLE:
  • "In a day where we were fatigued, lots of things were going wrong, and we were out of rhythm, we found a way to find our legs, make a few plays, and have a tremendous second half offensive performance. Nate Kendricks carried the scoring load early for us, Spencer Heimerdinger made a ton of plays out of the high post, and it seems like Adrian Antunez made every single play for us down the stretch. We will get some much needed rest tomorrow, attempt to reset and focus on 3 games next week with massive postseason implications for us. We have big aspirations, and I'm proud of our team's toughness and togetherness today."- head coach C.J. Haydock

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two teams went back and forth for the bulk of the first half, but the Penguins' five threes helped them carry a four-point lead into the intermission.
  • Dominican started the second half with a hot hand, as a Chris Williams triple pushed the home team's lead to ten points two minutes in.
  • Garrett Cook answered with a three of his own at the other end, sparking a 22-8 Sunbird run.
  • With the game tied at 63 and just over five minutes left on the clock, Aamondae Coleman bullied his way to the rim for a dunk to help FPU retake the lead.
  • Kendricks knocked down a three-ball to put the 'Birds up six immediately following the final media timeout of the game, and the Blue and Orange never looked back.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Dominican's Jalen Ragsdale led all scorers with 29 points, while Antunez led Fresno Pacific with 21, including a 5-5 effort from behind the arc.
  • Kendricks, Heimerdinger, and Coleman followed with 17, 16 and 14 points respectively.
  • FPU connected on 67% of their shots from the floor in the second half and missed just three of their 11 threes.
  • Saturday's game featured six ties and ten lead changes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • With only one conference game left on the schedule, Fresno Pacific is the only PacWest team that remains unbeaten in pod play this season.
  • The NCAA West Regional will be announced on Sunday, March 7. Six total teams from the PacWest, GNAC and RMAC conferences will make up the tournament, which will be hosted by Colorado School of Mines.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds have a busy week ahead, hosting Academy of Art on Tuesday before welcoming Humboldt State to the Special Events Center for two weekend games. Tipoff for Tuesday's game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., with live stats and video streaming available free of charge at FPUAthletics.com.
