Sunbirds Stunned by Eagles at WWPA Championships

DAVIS, Calif. –  The Fresno Pacific University men's water polo team took on Biola in the opening round of the Western Water Polo Association Championships on Friday morning. The Sunbirds controlled the match early, but the Eagles stormed back to pick up the upset win 10-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After giving up an early goal, WWPA Freshman of the Year Bodhi Bowden scored two consecutive goals to put the Sunbirds up 2-1.
  • Thilo Popp and Pietro Cattano scored goals in the first period, putting the Sunbirds up 4-1.
  • In the second period, the Birds outpaced the Eagles 3-2 and took a 7-3 lead into halftime.
  • The Sunbirds led 7-5in the third quarter when Nikita Kravtsov and Cattano scored back-to-back goals to go up 9-5.
  • The Eagles scored five unanswered goals over the final 12 minutes of the match to take it 10-9.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Bowden led the Sunbirds with three goals and tied for a team-high three steals.
  • Cattano tied Bowden with three steals while adding two goals and two assists.
  • Popp was the only other Sunbird to score multiple goals with two.
  • Eugenio Maldonado and Kravstov added a goal apiece for the Birds.
  • Clay Maroney made 12 saves for FPU.
