Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sunbirds Fall to Sac State in First Game of 2021

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team was tripped up in the first game of 2021 on Sunday afternoon, falling 85-54 at the hands of Sacramento State. All five contests (three games, two exhibitions) for FPU so far have come on the road against Division I opponents.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
  • Final: Sacramento State 85, Fresno Pacific 54
  • Location: The Nest | Sacramento, Calif.
  • Records: FPU (0-3), CSUS (5-1)
QUOTABLE:
  • "Sacramento State just really flexed us defensively, and we couldn't find a solution for some of their base stuff. Combine that with getting bullied on the glass, and you get a tough go for us. I thought A.J. Kirby and Alex Ferguson did a good job of responding in the second half and rebounding at a better clip. We have some work to do defensively, both scheme-wise and in terms of individual fundamentals, to compete at the level we aspire to." - head coach C.J. Haydock

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hornets controlled the opening tip, but Aamondae Coleman came away with the first bucket of the afternoon at the other end of the floor.
  • Coleman scored six of FPU's first ten points to help the Sunbirds carry a slim lead into the first media timeout, but the home team answered with a 15-4 run to settle into an offensive rhythm.
  • Senior guard Christian Terrell shot 9-of-11 from the floor in the first half, racking up 20 points to carry the Hornets to an 18-point lead at the intermission.
  • Sacramento State never took their foot off the gas in the second half, outscoring their guests 38-25 over the game's final 20 minutes.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Coleman matched Adrian Antunez for a team-high ten points, while Terrell ended his day with a game-high 26.
  • The Hornets outrebounded FPU 44-20 and won the battle of the turnovers by a margin of 14-9.
