FPU Edges Dominican on Senior Day, Turns Focus to Conference Tourney

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's basketball team wrapped up the 2019-20 regular season on Saturday, defeating Dominican 87-83 on Senior Day. The Sunbirds will play in the PacWest Conference Tournament next week on the campus of Azusa Pacific.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • The Sunbirds and Penguins went back-and-forth for the bulk of the first half, with the Blue and Orange leading by four at the break.
  • FPU outscored Dominican 21-15 in the third quarter, but the Penguins opened the fourth on a 12-4 run to get within a bucket.
  • Ashley Cross made a layup and a three to push FPU's lead back to seven with just over seven minutes to play.
  • Dominican's Jerusha Paine answered with five points of her own to again make it a single possession game, but the Sunbirds connected on five of their final eight shots to hold on for the win.    
 
STATS FROM THE GAME: 
  • Paine turned in a remarkable afternoon, recording game-highs in points (45) and rebounds (23), while Cross posted a career-high 31 points to go with a team-high 14 boards.    
  • Cassie Pisik also gave the Sunbirds a double-double with 11 rebounds and an even 10 points, and freshmen Felicia Dourva and Sara Lundqvist each gave the FPU 16 points off the bench.
  • FPU won the turnover battle 13-10, while Paine's big night helped the Penguins claim a 46-43 edge on the glass.
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Cross reached 1,000 career points in the second half, becoming the third player on the team to do so this season.  
  • The Sunbirds will be headed to the PacWest Conference Tournament for the second straight year.

  • Fresno Pacific will be the six-seed in the conference tournament next week and will match up against Concordia in the first round. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
