‘Birds Prevail in Tight Battle on Senior Day

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team closed out the 2019-20 season on Saturday, defeating Dominican 74-71 at the Special Events Center. The Sunbirds honored Nehemiah Allen as the lone senior in the class prior to the game.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
  • Final: FPU 74, Dominican 71
  • Records: FPU (10-17, 8-13 PacWest), Biola (16-11, 12-9 PacWest)
  • Location: Special Events Center | Fresno, Calif.

QUOTABLE:
  • "Coach Haydock gave me an opportunity to play here, and I'm forever grateful for the coaching staff here. Fresno Pacific is a big family for me. Over the course of two years, we've been building something, and winning tonight is the beginning of what they are going to do next year." – Nehemiah Allen

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Penguins controlled the opening tip, but an Adrian Antunez jumper started the scoring at the other end of the floor.
  • FPU found themselves down by as many as nine in the first half, but Jonathan Brown knocked down a triple from the corner to cut the deficit to three heading to the break.
  • The Sunbirds tied the game at 48 two minutes into the second half, and following Brown's free throw that put the home team in front by a point, FPU began to click, connecting on each of the next three buckets.
  • Allen came away with a steal and a breakaway dunk to give the Blue and Orange a nine-point advantage, and while the Penguins would remain within striking distance, the Sunbirds refused to relinquish the lead over the final nine minutes.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Juniors Adrian Antunez and Aamondae Coleman each poured in 21 points for the Sunbirds, while Jaelen Ragsdale and Jordan Williams combined for 47 for Dominican.
  • The Sunbirds outrebounded their guests 36-24, but the Penguins won the turnover battle by a margin of 14-10.
  • FPU connected on 47% from the floor and 85% from the free throw line.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Coleman finishes the regular season at second in the PacWest Conference in scoring at 18.1 points per game.
