FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team was tripped up in crosstown matchup on Saturday evening, falling 78-65 at the hands of Fresno State. Senior
Aamondae Coleman led all scorers with 24 points, but FPU was unable to overcome their slowest offensive start of the season.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
- Final: Fresno State 78, Fresno Pacific 65
- Location: Save Mart Center | Fresno, Calif.
QUOTABLE:
- "Their physicality got to us, and we had an all-time poor shooting performance in the first half. We could have folded at halftime, but we found a way to chip away. That speaks to who we are, and we're going to keep being that. We're masquerading as a Division I school, but we have stretches where I'm impressed with our guys' toughness, togetherness and grit. We are looking forward to some Division II opponents, but we have hung in there well with teams at the next level. There are snippets in there that speak to a very bright year and future for us." – fifth-year head coach C.J. Haydock
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Coleman gave FPU control of the opening tip, but the Sunbirds missed their first five attempts from the floor to allow Fresno State to take an early lead.
- The Blue and Orange never found an offensive rhythm over the game's first 20 minutes, and the Bulldogs went into the locker room with a 35-14 advantage at the break.
- FPU's halftime adjustments proved to be significant, as Coleman hit a pair of triples and knocked down two jumpers in the paint just before the eight-minute media to cut the Sunbird deficit to single digits.
- All of Coleman's game-high 24 points came in the second half, while Garrett Cook connected on 5-of-6 from the floor after the intermission to add another 13.
STATS FROM THE GAME:
- Coleman rounded out his second double of the year against a Division I opponent, collecting a team-high 10 rebounds.
- Adrian Antunez filled up the stat sheet, finishing his night with 12 points while adding six boards and handing out six assists.
- The 'Birds outscored their guests 51-43 in the first half, sinking nearly 60% of their shots from the floor along the way.
