‘Birds Three-Point Barrage Not Enough Against Broncos

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team was tripped up in a road exhibition on Tuesday, falling 88-65 at the hands of Santa Clara. Garrett Cook led the team with 14 points, including a 4-of-7 effort from behind the arc.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
  • Final: SCU 88, FPU 65
  • Location: Kaiser Permanente Arena | Santa Cruz, Calif.

QUOTABLE:
  • "We got better today. Santa Clara is tremendously well coached, and their size really affected us on both sides from the floor. We shot it well, our guys made good second half adjustments, and I really liked our resiliency and relentless positivity. We got great contributions from our bench crew: Cook, Alex Ferguson, Nick Damato, Sean Nealon-Lino and Jamal Briscoe. We keep working to tighten up our execution on both sides of the ball." – fifth-year head Coach C.J. Haydock

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Broncos opened the night with a 10-0 run, but a three-pointer from Nealon-Lino broke the FPU dry spell.
  • A fast break dunk from Briscoe brought the Sunbirds to within eight with 12:42 left in the first half.
  • With 6:28 left before halftime, Cook hit back-to-back three-pointers that broke a 13-0 run from the Broncos.
  • The Sunbirds played the Broncos within eight in the second half, but Santa Clara was able to keep their guests at bay.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • The Sunbirds knocked down a season-best eight three-pointers before halftime.
  • Five Broncos got into double-figures in scoring, while Cook became the first Sunbird not named Aamondae Coleman to lead the team in points.
  • FPU narrowly won the turnover battle by a margin of 17-16, but the Broncos cleaned up on the glass to out-rebound FPU 44-25.
