FPU Tripped Up to Open 2019 Campaign

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's soccer team fell 2-1 at the hands of Central Washington in Thursday night's season opener.

QUOTABLE:
"Tonight was a very evenly matched game, and Central Washington is a much-improved team. We had some good play in the game and some things we need to work on to be better," head coach Rob Podeyn said. "It wasn't the result we were looking for, but it definitely showed a lot of promise for us moving forward."

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: CWU 2, FPU 1
Records: FPU (0-1), CWU (1-0)
All-Time Series: FPU trails 0-1-2

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • FPU wasted no time, striking for the first score of the season less than four minutes into the match.
  • 13 minutes into the second half, the Wildcats found the equalizer, and a late score was just enough for CWU to leave Fresno with their first win.

SCORING:
  • (3:29) Gia Jager crossed to Mackenzie Reynolds at the top of the box, and Reynolds fired to the lower left corner to put the Sunbirds on the board.
  • (58:50) A Wildcat corner kick saw the ball bounce around in the box before Bryn Waite finally gathered and connected with Maci Parke for the score.
  • (84:10) Sydney Lowe was credited with the game-winner after dribbling into the box and finding the net just inside the far post.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • CWU outshot their hosts 11-8, including a 6-3 mark in shots on target.
  • Birgitta Eggertsdottir picked up four saves in her Sunbird debut, but Wildcat keeper Emily Thomson only needed two for her first win of the year.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Thursday night marks the first time in the series that the match has ended in anything but a draw.
