‘Birds Freeze Dominican to Earn Three Points

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's soccer team picked up their first conference win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating Dominican 2-1 at Ramirez Field. 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
  • Final: Fresno Pacific 2, Dominican 1  
  • Records: FPU (3-6-0, 1-1-0 PacWest), DUC (1-6-1, 0-2-0)

QUOTABLE:
  • "It's been typical for us to start strong and apply a lot of pressure early, but the substitutions we made in the second half were significant for us tonight. We had multiple guys come off the bench that gave us a different and much-needed effort, and we're pleased with the three points," head coach Jaime Ramirez said. "Momentum against a solid team is important, and we want to make sure our boys know that next week is a business trip. We want to bring back nine points."
 
SCORING:
  • (5:16) Fellipe Souza juked a defender and bent the ball around him with some fancy footwork to start the scoring.  
  • (56:52) Thomas Van Schoor played the ball up to Robert Garcia, who fired to the lower left corner for the equalizer. 
  • (70:27 Caesar Angulo was on the receiving end of Tony Torres' free kick, heading it home for the game-winner.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • FPU outshot their guests 15-11, though Dominican took 7 of the game's 13 shots on frame.         
  • Sunbird goalkeeper Patrick Timmer racked up six saves en route to his second win of the year. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • The Blue and Orange now claim a 16-game unbeaten streak against the Penguins, and FPU has not lost a game in the series since 1998.

  • The Sunbirds are open a three-game Hawaii swing on Monday, when they take on Chaminade in PacWest action. Opening whistle from Honolulu is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. PST.
