QUOTABLE:
- "Cal State East Bay is a much improved team this year. They played with a lot of intensity and caught us on a counter to go up 1-0 at the half. In the second half, we finally settled into our game and kept putting pressure on them. Unfortunately, one mistake combined with a deflected ball found its way into our net to make it 2-0. We played much better in the second half, but we still haven't found our game yet. Once we do, we will be very tough to beat." – head coach Rob Podeyn
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Pioneers wasted little time defending their home turf, striking in the game's 15th minute for an early 1-0 lead.
- FPU put all four first half shot attempts on frame, but East Bay keeper Briana Vasquez-Ortiz stayed busy, tallying four saves in the first 45 minutes to head to the intermission with a 1-0 lead.
- CSUEB duplicated their effort in the second half, scoring 17 minutes into the period and racking up another four saves.
SCORING:
- (14:21) Jordan Lemieux connected with Abby Buitrago, who became the first Pioneer with multiple goals this season.
- (62:32) Liz Hernandez became the fourth East Bay player to find the back of the net this season after assists from Chace Miguel and Bri Vallente.
STATS:
- The Sunbirds outshot their hosts 8-5, including an 8-3 mark in shots on frame.
- Vasquez-Ortiz saved all eight shots she faced, while FPU's Peyton Shaffer earned a save in her first colleigate start between the posts.
- The Pioneers took four of the five corner kicks for the night.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- The Blue and Orange have outshot both of their opponents on the young season.
- Dating back to 2015, FPU has dropped its last nine contests against schools in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference.
UP NEXT
- Fresno Pacific returns to the pitch on Monday, when they take on perennial CCAA power Stanislaus State in Turlock. Opening whistle is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. from Warrior Stadium.
