National Championships: Day Two

RESULTS - DAY 1/2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
The Fresno Pacific track and field team recorded two more strong performances on Friday, breaking school records in the women's 400-meter as well as the 4x400 relay.

After qualifying for the 400-meter finals on Thursday, Brie Courseault continued her impressive sophomore campaign by finishing second in her 200-meter heat to earn an automatic spot in Saturday's finals. Her time of 23.92 was good enough to break her own program record, set earlier this year at the Stanford Invitational.

"Brie came in as a 15 seed, but as she's as fearless a competitor as anyone that has ever donned a Sunbirds uniform. She is the perfect example of what can happen when you do all the little things right," head coach Ray Winter said. "I don't know how many amazing efforts she can put into one season, but she turned in another gritty performance on a huge stage today."

The Sunbirds were near the front of the pack in the women's 4x400 relay, but a bobble on the second exchange forced them to settle for a 12th place finish. Even with the mistake, the team of Courseault, Kyra Bailey, Cathrin Wicke, and Danae Manibog turned in a time of 3:45.10, setting another program record.

"The dropped baton exchange was a heartbreaker to say the least, especially when you consider the times each individual ran. These four underclassmen were on pace for a qualifying effort, but track can be unforgiving," Winter said. "They never gave up, and breaking a school record is a testament to their character and belief in one another. It was not the life lesson we wanted today, but it is not lost on us. I'm confident that today will fuel their fire moving forward."

The Sunbirds will compete in four events on the meet's final day, beginning with Andrew Morin in the men's pole vault at 9:30 a.m. PST. Courseault's 400-meter final is set for a 1:35 p.m. start time, followed by Wicke's 400-hurdle at 2:40. Courseault will wrap up the event for FPU with the 200-meter final beginning at 3:00.
