Berry Provides Bench Spark as Sunbirds Cruise at Home

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's basketball team picked up a PacWest Conference victory on Saturday, defeating Concordia 66-47 to remain undefeated on their home floor. Redshirt freshman guard Rachel Berry gave the Sunbirds a game-high 14 points off the bench, becoming the sixth different FPU player to lead the team in scoring this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Jessica Malazarte and Ashley Cross teamed up for the first 11 FPU points, giving the home team a five-point lead at the first media timeout of the day.   
• Julia Locastro blocked two Eagle shots in the final four seconds of the opening quarter, keeping the Sunbird lead at 17-9 after the first ten minutes.
• Cassie Pisik turned a missed Concordia layup into a jumper at the other end for the final field goal of the first half, putting the Blue and Orange in front 32-19 at the intermission.  
• The Sunbirds missed their first three shots in the third quarter but followed with a 13-2 run, highlighted by six points from Rachel Berry.
• With 44 seconds remaining in the period, Berry connected on another jumper to give FPU a 28-point advantage, marking the largest Sunbird lead in league play this season. 
• Concordia outscored their hosts 13-8 in the final quarter, but Fresno Pacific improved to 3-1 in league action.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME:
• Berry led all scorers with 14 points, while Cross finished as the only other Sunbird in double-figures.   
• Concordia's Michaela Vanderklugt hauled in a game-best 17 rebounds to help the Eagles outrebound the Sunbirds 51-42.   
• FPU committed a season-low eight turnovers, and the 'Birds have still lost the turnover battle just once this season.
 
GAME BALL PERFORMANCE:
• Rachel Berry: 21 minutes, game-high 14 points, 5-8 from the floor, 4-4 at the line, three rebounds, two assists    
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
• The Sunbirds never trailed at any point in Saturday's game.
• FPU's 3-1 start to league play is the best mark since joining the PacWest Conference ahead of the 2012-13 season.
