Sunbirds Fall in Season Finale, Finish Fourth in PacWest

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's soccer team was tripped up on Saturday night, falling 2-1 to Hawai'i Hilo in the final game of the season. The Sunbirds finish the season in fourth place in the PacWest Conference standings after posting a 7-4-0 record in league play.     
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Hawai'i Hilo 2, FPU 1 
Records: FPU (7-10-1, 7-4-0 PacWest), UHH (10-4-2, 7-3-1 PacWest)
All-Time Series: Tied 3-3-1 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The two teams exchanged opportunities throughout the first half, but the game remained scoreless at the intermission.
• The Vulcans got on the board in the 61st minute, but FPU answered with the equalizer 15 minutes later.  
• An 84th-minute goal was the difference for Hawai'i Hilo, helping the Vulcans wrap up the season with the best finish in the history of the program.   
 
SCORING: 
• (60:20) Carlie Reader dished off to Jaimie Salas in a crowded box, and Salas fired to the keeper's left for the score.   
• (75:24) Hannah Strong gained control after a scramble for the ball, and she connected with Tori De Leon to get the 'Birds on the board.  
• (83:16) Hedda Bjerklund trickled a ball into the back of the net, putting UHH on top for good.   
 
STATS FROM THE GAME:
• Hawai'i Hilo outshot their hosts 23-8, including a mark of 9-4 in shots on frame.    
• Alex Benevidez racked up six saves and the Sunbirds added a team save. Bailey Cahill gave the UHH three saves in the win.     
• The Vulcans took four of the game's five corner kicks.    
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
• The Sunbirds bid farewell to seniors Alex Benevidez, Whitney Snow, Vanessa Casillas, Hannah Strong and Brittney Chow prior to the match.
