Strong Second Half Not Enough to Push Sunbirds Past Pioneers

FRESNO, Calif. – Despite scoring two goals in the second half, the Fresno Pacific women's soccer team came up short on Thursday night, falling 3-2 at the hands of Cal State East Bay.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Pioneers used the deep ball as a key factor of their offense, helping them score their first goal.
• Cal State East Bay added to their lead twice in six minutes to move in front 3-0 with 30 minutes to play.
Rachel Anderson and Gia Jager provided the Blue and Orange with some late offense, but the Pioneers held the ball for most of the final two minutes.
 
SCORING:
• (16:38) Janelle Herrera's connected with Aulani Fernandez on a long pass, and Fernandez answered with a header to give CSUEB the first lead of the night.
• (54:59) Carsyn Hoogendoorn led Miranda Gonzalez with a perfect cross, leading to Gonzalez winning a one-on-one for the second goal.
• (60:45) Fernandez struck for the second time after a flawless corner kick, pushing the Pioneer lead to 3-2.
• (61:41) Paige Jano's shot was deflected, pacing the way for Rachel Anderson to put the Sunbirds on the board.
• (86:08) Gia Jager picked up her first career goal with a soft touch past the Pioneer keeper.

STATS OF THE GAME:
• Fernandez has now scored three goals this season, emerging as the team leader on Thursday night.
• Jano and Jager join Whitney Snow as Sunbirds credited with goals this fall.
• FPU goalkeeper Summer Hammond recorded six saves, while CSUEB counterpart Ina Gonzalez tallied four.
• Each team took 13 shots, but the Pioneers claimed a 9-6 edge in shots on frame.
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
• Fresno Pacific has started the year 0-3 for the first time since 2014.
• Five total goals is the highest combined score for either team so far this year.
• Thursday was Cal State East Bay's first ever victory in Fresno.
 
UP NEXT:
• The Sunbirds return to action on Saturday, when they take on Cal State L.A. on the road. Opening whistle from Jesse Owens Track is slated for 1:00 p.m.
