Sunbirds Rally in Dramatic Double-Overtime Win at BYU-H

LAIE, Hawai'i – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team outlasted BYU-Hawaii 94-88 in double overtime on Monday night, as FPU used a balanced scoring attack of five players in double-figures to escape Hawai'i with a win.

The Sunbirds snapped their six-game skid with the win and improved to 5-19 overall and 5-12 in the PacWest. It marked FPU's second win of the season in double OT. BYU-H falls to 5-18 overall and 3-14 in league action.

T.J. Viney led FPU with 24 points and four assists, while Mike Crawley added 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Spencer Krannitz delivered a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds, Sam Burt recorded his second double-double in as many games with 12 points and 12 rebounds and Sam Holmes scored 12 points with four threes.

"I'm tremendously proud of our guys tonight," said head coach C.J. Haydock. "We had a level of toughness and togetherness that is hard to describe, and given a whole set of adverse conditions. We just kept battling and battling."

The Sunbirds found themselves down by 10 in the second half with 16 minutes to play, but a three from Viney sparked a comeback. FPU eventually tied the game at 47-47 after a three from Sam Holmes. After each team exchanged multiple buckets, Viney hit a three and Burt converted a layup to put the Sunbirds ahead 67-63 with 40 seconds to play. BYU-H managed to force the first overtime with a 4-0 run, however, before regulation ended.

FPU once again had to fight back, this time in the first overtime period trailing 74-71 with just over two minutes left. Viney connected on a three to tie the game and then came up clutch with a deep three with under a minute to play to force the second overtime with the score tied 77-77.

BYU-H came out in the final OT frame with a three, but Crawley answered right back behind the arc to even the game. Each team exchanged buckets before Krannitz received a pass from Crawley and found the bottom of the net with a reverse layup to give the Sunbirds an advantage they wouldn't relinquish. R.J. Horn then put the game away with a layup and two free throws inside the final minute.

"We had different guys carry us in separate stretches," noted Haydock. "T.J. demonstrated some great senior leadership, and R.J. had a big bucket and free throws in the second overtime."

Viney's 24 points came on 7-of-14 shots, which included four threes and a perfect 6-of-6 clip from the free-throw line. It increased his career best in points, which previously stood at 20 set against HPU on Saturday. Horn finished with four points, four assists and a career-best 12 rebounds.

"We did a really good job on the glass, and gritted out just enough stops in the second overtime to get out of here on top," said Haydock.

The Sunbirds out-rebounded the Seasiders 56-51 and scored 17 second-chance points. The game featured seven lead changes.

Caeleb Rooney led BYU-H with 21 points, while Tanner Nelson added a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Sunbirds return home after a week in Hawai'i and host Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 4:30 p.m.
