Sunbirds Edged by Pioneers in Tight Road Battle

LANCASTER, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's basketball team was tripped up on Monday night, falling 80-74 to Antelope Valley on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Pioneers controlled the opening tip, but Cassie Pisik's three at the other end gave the Sunbirds the first lead of the night.
• The two teams went back and forth for most of the first half, with UAV carrying a slim 36-35 edge into the locker room at the intermission.
• Jessica Malazarte and Megan Lee combined for 21 second half points, but the Pioneers shot 50% from the floor for the half.
• Fresno Pacific was forced to play the foul game down the stretch, but UAV connected on their last nine free throws of the game.
 
STATS OF THE GAME:
• Malazarte led the Sunbirds with 19 points, while Bree Alvarez finished on her heels with 18. Lee and Pisik also got into double-figures, scoring 13 and 11 respectively.
• Malazarte also dished out a career-high six assists for the second consecutive contest, while Viviana Vasquez hauled in a team-high six rebounds.
• For UAV, Samantha Earl led all scorers with 20 points as one of four Pioneers in double-figures, while Tiffany Perkins rounded out a double-double with 10 boards.
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
• Monday marked the fourth time this season that the Sunbirds had four players score in double-figures.   
• FPU matched their season-best 10 threes while shooting 40% from behind the arc.
 
UP NEXT:
• The Sunbirds are back at home on Saturday, when they host Dominican in PacWest Conference action. Tipoff from the Special Events Center is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
