Sunbirds Soar Past Hawks 3-0

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific volleyball team picked up their fourth win in five games following a dominant 3-0 sweep of Holy Names on Thursday. Set scores were 25-19, 25-13 and 25-12 in favor of FPU.

QUOTABLE:
• "We really put the game plan in the setters hands tonight. The fact that they distributed so well tonight is good to see. We like to make sure we aren't a one-dimensional team." – head coach Tracy Ainger-Schulte

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Sunbirds used nine service aces and a strong offensive and defensive attack to down the Hawks in straight sets.
• FPU used a 6-1 run in the middle of the first set to distance itself from Holy Names before eventually going up 1-0 in the match.
• The 'Birds then dominated the final two sets, which was highlighted by a strong attack in the final frame (.296 hitting).
 
STATS OF THE GAME:
Madison Pierce led the FPU attack with a season-best 13 kills, while Kylei Dewar added seven kills and five aces.
Gabriela Macedo headed the defensive effort with 12 digs and Tiff Wong added 10 scoops.
Christina Tran dished out a team-high 19 assists and her counterpart Greta Dobenecker finished with 14.
• FPU held HNU to a negative .024 hitting attack in the win, while the 'Birds countered at .228.
• Summer Williams led the Hawks with five kills.
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
• FPU picked up its second straight set victory of the season. It was also the second such victory of the week.
• The Sunbirds have won four of their last five games.
• Pierce's 13 kills were not only a season best, but a career high. It was also her fourth double-digit effort of the season.
 
UP NEXT:
FPU continues its seven-game homestand on Monday, as the 'Birds host Hawai'i Pacific at 6 p.m. on Faculty Appreciation Night.
