Sunbirds Downed by NDNU in Road Clash

BELMONT, Calif.   – The Fresno Pacific men's soccer team stumbled on Wednesday afternoon, falling 3-2 to Notre Dame de Namur in PacWest action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• NDNU struck first, but the Sunbirds found the equalizer and went into the intermission with the game tied at 1-1.
• The Argos got two scores early in the second half to go in front 3-1.
• Fresno Pacific got within a goal with under two minutes to play, but Notre Dame de Namur ensured the Sunbirds would get no closer.

SCORING:
• (27:10) Senior Esteban Berumen opened the scoring in the game's 28th minute after an Argo player was taken down in the box.
• (34:37) Anthony Velarde found Fellipe Souza, who one-timed to the upper right to even the score at 1-1.
• (56:52) Naia Graham and Tony Andoyan made a pair of quick passes, allowing Berumen to find the net for the second time.
• (62:34) After an inadvertent FPU handball in the box, Berumen converted the penalty kick to push the Argo lead to 3-1.
• (88:07) Jose Segura was on the receiving end of a corner kick and fired to the back post to provide the final score of the afternoon.

STATS OF THE GAME:
• The Argos outshot their guests 17-13, including a 9-6 mark in shots on frame.
• FPU keeper Patrick Timmer recorded six saves, while Javier Santana needed just three to pick up the win.
• The Sunbirds took eight of the game's 12 corner kicks, and the two teams totaled 39 fouls.   
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
• Wednesday marked the third career hat trick for Berumen, who now leads the team in goals with nine on the season. He has scored in three of his four career games against the Sunbirds.
•  The loss hands Fresno Pacific their third consecutive PacWest defeat, the first such streak since joining the league prior to the 2012 season.
• The last four Sunbird goals have been scored by four different players (Bruno Brumati, Anthony Velarde, Souza, Segura).
 
UP NEXT:
• The Sunbirds return home on Saturday, when they will renew their rivalry with longtime Golden State Athletic Conference foe Biola. Opening whistle from Ramirez Field is set for 7:30 p.m.
