FPU Men Cruise Past ARTU Behind Souza’s Hat Trick

FRESNO, Calif.  – The Fresno Pacific men's soccer team picked up a 5-1 victory over Academy of Art on Thursday night, with Fellipe Souza recording his first career hat trick along the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Sunbirds had plenty of opportunities early, getting on the board with three first half goals.
• FPU managed a fourth goal 22 minutes into the second half, and the two teams exchanged scores in the final ten minutes.    

SCORING:
• (3:13) ARTU Goalkeeper Kris Jensson came out of the net, allowing Fellipe Souza to trickle a ball in for the game's first score.  
• (15:10) Anthony Velarde shook his defender and fired to the far post to put the Sunbirds in front 2-0.
• (37:11) Velarde added an assist to his ledger after finding Pak Hei Chan in the box in the game's 38th minute.
• (67:05) Souza added his second goal of the night after winning a one-on-one with the keeper.
• (82:33) Jonny Navarro got the Urban Knights on the board with a second chance effort after Patrick Timmer saved a penalty kick.
• (88:10) With traffic built up inside the box, Souza was credited with his third goal of the night.

STATS OF THE GAME:
• FPU outshot their hosts 19-4, including a mark of 10-8 on frame.
• The Sunbirds earned four of the night's seven corner kicks.
• Timmer racked up seven saves between the pipes, while Kevin Mendez recorded three saves in the second half for ARTU.

BEYOND THE BOX:
• The Sunbirds have now had two hat tricks this season, as Souza follows Velarde's performance from Oct. 9 against Holy Names.
• Timmer's seven saves are tied for his season-best, matching his night against Cal State Monterey Bay.
• Thursday marked the third time this fall that the Sunbirds have taken at least ten shots on target.    
 
UP NEXT:
• Fresno Pacific returns to action on Saturday, when they host Azusa Pacific at Ramirez Field at 7:30 p.m. The Sunbirds will celebrate their senior class prior to the game.
