Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sunbirds Ride Pair of Chedraui Scores to 2-0 Victory in PacWest Opener

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University men's soccer team came away with a win to open PacWest Conference action on Thursday night, defeating Chaminade 2-0 at Ramirez Field. The Sunbirds improved to 2-2-1 with the victory, while the Silverswords dropped to 0-3 on the year.

"This team was much-improved from last season. We know we are going to get everybody's best game this year. We talked with our guys at halftime and made some adjustments, and we recognized that our chances were coming," head coach Jaime Ramirez said. "It was wonderful to see our go-to guy get on the scoreboard tonight. We started the conference schedule with three points, and that's the most important thing."

The Sunbirds saw plenty of opportunities in the first half but ultimately went to the intermission with a scoreless tie. In the game's 71st minute, however, the Blue and Orange finally broke loose after Jorge Chedraui's shot landed just inside the left pipe.

"Tonight was about patience and confidence for us. We had confidence coming into this game, but we're still building," Chedraui said. "Every day, we are getting better. I hope this is the road to us winning the PacWest."

With the home team already on the board, Chedraui struck again less than four minutes later after a free kick from Joao Ravasio. The latter led Chedraui toward the net, and he responded by heading in his second goal of the night to provide the Birds with all the insurance they would need.

The offensive attack proved to be a big part of the night for the Sunbirds, as they outshot their guests 23-5, including a 14-2 mark on frame. FPU keeper Matias Fernandez recorded just two saves en route to his first shutout at Fresno Pacific, while Chedraui posted the eighth multi-score game of his career.

The Sunbirds return to action on Saturday, when they host BYU-Hawaii in another PacWest showdown at Ramirez Field. Opening whistle is slated for 5:00 pm.
