TURLOCK, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's soccer team earned its second win of the weekend on Sunday afternoon after knocking off Western Oregon by a final of 2-0. The Sunbirds improve to 2-1-0 on the year with the victory, while the Wolves drop to 2-2-0 with both losses coming in the Stanislaus State Warrior Challenge.
"With each game, we've played better. We played for a full ninety minutes today, and it turned out to be our best performance of the season so far," head coach
Rob Podeyn said. "This game was more consistent and complete, and every player stepped up for us. It was nice to see us break through and keep the shutout."
After a scoreless first half,
Rachel Anderson's first career goal came in the 79th minute and provided the Blue and Orange with a 1-0 advantage. While the Wolves were still plotting a counter attack,
Amber Rodriguez struck less than three minutes later to push the FPU lead to 2-0, becoming the fourth Sunbird to find the back of the net this season.
Summer Hammond recorded three saves in the net to preserve the first shutout of her senior campaign and second of her career. The Birds also claimed a 4-1 edge in corner kicks, marking the first time through their first three games that they have taken more set pieces than their opponent.
Fresno Pacific returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they hit the road to take on Cal State San Marcos in their final non-conference tune-up. The match is set to begin at 12:30 p.m.
"They will come in with some momentum because they've played some very good opponents and posted some impressive results," Podeyn said. "They are well-coached and very organized, so we will do our best to play our game."
