RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's basketball team was tripped up on Saturday evening, falling 102-59 against 10th-ranked California Baptist in PacWest Conference play.
"I was proud of how we competed for most of this game, as we were locked in against an incredibly talented team. They capitalized on our mistakes and made it tough for us to get back into it," head coach
Tim Beauregard said. "We will continue to embrace our challenges, but I'm happy with where we are going."
Despite CBU controlling the opening tip and scoring the game's first bucket, the Sunbirds connected on back-to-back possessions to take their first lead of the game less than a minute later.
Bree Alvarez went for 12 points in the 20 minutes, but CBU shot 42% from the floor to carry a 42-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Seven Sunbirds found the bottom of the net in the second half, but the hot-shooting Lancers refused to take their foot off the gas. PacWest Preseason Player of the Year Cassidy Mihalko put up 16 of her 24 points after the intermission, marking the eighth time this season she has scored at least 20 points.
For the Sunbirds, Alvarez finished with a team-high 16 points, while
Cassie Pisik added 10 points of her own while collecting six rebounds. FPU was unable to slow the high-paced Lancer offense, which has now scored 100+ points in three straight games.
FPU returns to action on Monday, when they host Antelope Valley in a non-conference game. Tip-off from the Special Events Center is set for 5:30 p.m.
