Sunbirds Come Up Short Against CSULA Despite Big Night from Crawley

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno Pacific dropped a non-conference game against Cal State Los Angeles, 80-66, on Saturday despite a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds from Mike Crawley.

FPU drops to 1-8 overall with the setback, while CSULA improves to 5-5 overall.

"I thought our compete level was good in stretches," said head coach C.J. Haydock. "I thought Cal State LA was really prepared to take us out of our rhythm and make us uncomfortable offensively, and it really challenged us to find ways to score."

The Sunbirds and Golden Eagles exchanged buckets throughout the entire first half, as CSULA entered the locker room ahead 41-35. The Golden Eagles went on to lead by as many as 17 in the second half en route to the win. The Sunbirds cut the deficit to six after a Spencer Krannitz three with 9:30 to play, but wouldn't come any closer the rest of the way.

Crawley made 10-of-17 shots for a career-best 21 points, while his 11 boards matched a career-high. The double-double was his second of the season. The junior grabbed seven offensive rebounds and added two blocks. Kavika Jimenez added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Krannitz scored nine, grabbed three boards and dished out three assists and T.J. Viney delivered four points, four assists and five rebounds.

"Mike was everywhere for us," noted Haydock. "He had phenomenal energy and effort, and I thought Samuel Holmes gave us a really nice spark in the second half. We will continue to chip away, and fight for consistency and the ability to compete at a high level."

The Sunbirds were held to 39 percent from the floor, including a 19 percent clip from three (5-for-26). CSULA countered at 43 percent from the floor and 43 percent from deep. The Golden Eagles won the rebounding battle 41-38 and received 31 points off the bench.

Travis Hammonds led Cal State LA with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Jordan Nelson-Brown and Jordan Wilson added 13 points apiece.

FPU travels to Riverside on Saturday, Dec. 17 to jump back into PacWest play against #5 California Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
