FPU Schools Academy of Art, Offense Shares the Wealth in 4-0 Victory

FRESNO, Calif. – After being shut out in each of its last three contests, the Fresno Pacific University women's soccer team earned a 4-0 victory over Academy of Art on Wednesday evening. The Sunbirds now stand 6-5-1 overall, including a 4-3-1 mark in league action.

"We had two really tough games last week, so today was about getting back to finding our game. We knew we would be able to generate a lot of offense, so we wanted to be aggressive," head coach Rob Podeyn. "We asked several players to step up and help lead tonight to see if we could break through, and I think we did that."

The Blue and Orange were firing early and often, outshooting their guests 27-4 for the night. The first goal came in the 26th minute, when Rachelle Schiller dribbled past a pair of Art U defenders and launched a shot from inside the box.

Schiller became the fourth Sunbird to score her third goal of the season, but her share of the team lead only stood for three minutes. After a deflection bounced right to Sassy Weigant, the junior sent an uncontested shot into the net to push the FPU lead to 2-0.

Bianka Garcia was on the receiving end of Amber Rodriguez' set piece six minutes before the first half ended, and the Sunbirds were able to carry a 3-0 lead into the intermission. Alyssa Nakaguchi provided the final score of the night, striking from 25 yards out in the game's 57th minute to give the home team its second four-score game of the year.

Summer Hammond tallied a pair of saves through the first 56:26 before paving the way for Piper Brown to make her collegiate debut in the net. Brown was able to finish the shutout effort for the Sunbirds, who now claim five for the season.

Fresno Pacific returns to action on Saturday, when they play host to Holy Names in PacWest Conference action. The contest is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start time from Ramirez Field.

"Holy Names is a dangerous team, and we don't want to give them a chance to be in the game," Podeyn said. "We want to generate a similar attack to what we did tonight, and we want to establish early that we can dominate."
