RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Fresno Pacific fell in a high-scoring affair to #10 California Baptist, 108-95, Saturday on the road in front of 1,097 fans at Van Dyne Gym.
Gabe Solarin scored a career high 31 points for FPU in the NCAA Division II Game of the Week that was televised nationally by ESPN3.
FPU falls to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the PacWest with its third straight loss, while CBU moves to 14-2 overall and 5-1 in league action. The Lancers improved to 11-0 at home on the year and are now 41-1 in Riverside since the 2013-14 season.
Solarin finished 12-of-20 from the floor in the win, including 6-of-10 from three, for his game-high 31.
Roger Paul added 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting,
Madison Higgins scored 17 points,
Zach Bartley tallied 12 points and eight rebounds and
Spencer Krannitz added nine points and five assists for FPU in the setback.
"This was an awesome opportunity for our guys and our program to be televised on a national stage," said head coach
Tim Kisner. "I thought we played hard and competed, but the difference tonight was the rebounding. We had a few bad shot selections in the first half that I thought hurt our transition defense as well."
The Sunbirds trailed 29-23 in the first half before the Lancers used an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 14 with 5:59 left in the opening period. FPU went into halftime down 54-40.
The Sunbirds hung around in the second half and cut the deficit to 11 with 6:20 remaining following a layup from Bartley. FPU wouldn't come any closer, however, as CBU responded with a 6-0 run to increase its lead back to 17 with five minutes to play before earning the win.
The Lancers shot 49 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three, while FPU countered at a 53 percent clip from the field and 41 percent from three. CBU made 13 threes from long range and out-rebounded the Sunbirds 48-32. The Lancers scored 25 second-chance points off of 25 offensive rebounds.
Gelaun Wheelwright led the Lancers with 24 points, while Jordan Giusti and Michael Smith added 15 apiece.
"This is a tough part of our schedule," noted Kisner. "This stretch of games against some of the top teams in the conference has been a grind, but we will keep working and getting better as we head into the next one."
The Sunbirds are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 14 as they take on BYU-Hawaii at 7:30 p.m. The Seasiders defeated FPU in Fresno last Thursday, 86-76.
