Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late push not enough as Sunbird drop fifth straight

Fresno Pacific got off to a slow start but would storm back in the second half to push visiting BYU-Hawaii to the limit before ultimately falling 67-56 on Thursday night. Hannah Ramirez posted a double-double, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds and five steals as the Sunbirds fell to 2-10, 0-6 in the PacWest.

Taylor Martin, Megan Lee and Abrina Salas added seven points apiece for FPU. Martin added a team-high seven rebounds and Jasmine Shedrick blocked a game-high five shots.

The Sunbirds managed just nine points in the first quarter and would trail 31-23 at halftime. BYUH extended the lead to 14 midway through the third quarter but FPU finished out the quarter on a 6-0 run to trim the deficit. Lee opened the fourth with a big three-pointer that cut the Seasider lead to 50-47. The Seasiders extended the lead back up to seven with 2:30 to play but three-pointers by Salas and Martin get back within three at around the two-minute mark.

Some costly turnovers by the Sunbirds, combined with strong free-throw shooting by BYUH, would seal the outcome as the Seasiders outscored FPU 11-3 over the final two minutes.

Tyvette White scored 15 points and had five steals off the bench to lead BYUH. The teams combined for 47 turnovers, 24 of which were committed by the Sunbirds. BYUH out-shot FPU 37% to 26% as a team.

The Sunbirds are back in action on Saturday, taking on NCAA D-II #11-ranked Cal Baptist in a game that will be televised nationally and can be watched on ESPN3.
