AZUSA, Calif. - Fresno Pacific ran into an Azusa Pacific team hungry for its seventh straight victory on Saturday and after a tightly-contested first set went APU's way, the Cougars finished out the sweep 25-22, 25-16, 25-16.
FPU led 19-17 in set one after
Morghan Williams hammered a free ball down the middle. The Cougars however would run off four straight points to eventually take the set. APU (7-4, 3-0 PacWest) then jumped out to a 9-2 lead in set two and never looked back. The Sunbirds battled in set three but with the score tied 13-13, APU proceeded to run off eight unanswered points.
"We battled for every point and I thought overall we did a lot of things well," said head coach
Matt Terra. "Our middles started the match really strong and APU did a good job of adjusting their gameplay. Despite the setbacks I felt we really came together as a group on this road trip. We've been bit by the injury bug lately and that has held us back a little bit, but there were some positives as well.
Chelsea Speaks came off the bench, served well and gave us a big boost this weekend.
Hannah Butler played really strong defensively and kept us in a lot of plays. We are staying focused and looking ahead to our next match at NDNU."
Williams led the way for FPU with 10 kills and a .444 attack percentage.
Montana Lowe added nine kills and a team-high four blocks. Butler led the defense with 20 digs while
Bissie DenHartog finished with a double-double of 28 assists and 10 digs.
FPU hit .096 as a team while the Cougars hit .313. Ashley Midland led APU with 11 kills, hitting .450 in the win.
The Sunbirds hit the road again for their next match, heading to the Bay Area to take on Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday night.
