FRESNO, Calif. – Renato Bustamante's two first-half goals powered Fresno Pacific over Cal State San Bernardino 3-1 in non-conference action Tuesday at Ramirez Field.
With its second straight win, FPU improved to 2-1-1. CSUSB, a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), moved to 2-2-0 with the defeat. The Sunbirds end their non-conference slate against CCAA schools with two wins in four chances.
"That is a huge win for us," said head coach
Jaime Ramirez. "Cal State San Bernardino is a very, very good team and I think they are going to do very well in the CCAA this season. They are loaded with talent in every position. We did a good job offensively of putting pressure on their defense and our timing is starting to click. That is the brand of soccer we play here at FPU."
Bustamante wasted no time in giving FPU an early advantage with a goal in the third minute of play. Sophomore
Dylan Rusconi started the chance with a run into the box before crossing it to the foot of Bustamante for the goal.
CSUSB equalized in the 25th minute with an impressive shot from 30 yards out that found the left corner of the net. Chris Lavery was credited with the assist.
FPU answered six minutes later, however, with another goal from Bustamante to give the Sunbirds a 2-1 lead in the 31st minute. Sophomore
Anthony Velarde sent a cross into the box, where Bustamante found the ball and buried a touch into the net.
The Sunbirds took the advantage into halftime and added to it in the 48th minute with a score from
Jorge Chedraui, who created a Coyote turnover and slid a shot past the keeper to make the final 3-1.
Andrew Luis finished the game with three saves for FPU. The back line of
Martin Kams,
Dallas Whitlow,
Sergi Nus and
Emmanuel Ochoa pressured the CSUSB offense all night to help force turnovers into offensive chances for the Sunbirds. The defense forced the Coyotes offside seven times on the evening.
"The leadership of our senior players on the back line is really starting to show," said Ramirez. "The communication that is taking place from Andrew to our defense to hold the line and keep it organized is allowing us to minimize the opportunities our opponents have. I am very pleased with our growth from game one."
FPU hosts Westmont of the NAIA on Saturday, Sept. 19 in its final non-conference match of 2015. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Ramirez Field.
