Sunbirds battle with ranked opponents at PacWest/GNAC Challenge

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Fresno Pacific got a look at some of the NCAA West Region's top competition on Thursday, facing two ranked NCAA Division II opponents at the PacWest/GNAC Challenge. The Sunbirds fell 3-0 to #14 Alaska Anchorage and 3-1 to #19 Western Washington, but showed signs of life in each match to provide some positive takeaways for the young team.

The Sunbirds (0-3) took a set from the #19 Vikings as Gabriela Macedo led a balanced attack with eight kills to go with 18 digs. Sarah McCann added seven kills and nine digs, while Victoria Larsen, Madison Pierce and Morghan Williams finished with six kills apiece.

Hannah Butler had 22 digs to lead the defense and Bissie DenHartog posted a double-double of 17 assists and 10 digs.

After a grueling travel day that saw the team spend more than 13 hours in the San Francisco airport after a series of delayed flights, before finally reaching Ellensburg after 1 am, the Sunbirds faced the tall task of taking on the nation's #14-ranked Seawolves at 10 am this morning. After a sloppy first couple sets, the team settled in and hit .394 in the final frame despite the loss. Montana Lowe led the way with nine kills and a .571 attack percentage.

The Sunbirds continue the tournament tomorrow at 1:30 pm, taking on host Central Washington, who defeated #20 Point Loma in five sets today. The PacWest went 0-5 on the first day of action as Dixie State fell 3-0 to Western Washington and BYU Hawaii fell 3-0 to Northwest Nazarene.
