Sunbirds Shutout BYU-Hawaii to Win, 2-0

LAIE, Hawaii – Fresno Pacific received first-half goals from Renato Bustamante and Joey Belzil and shutout BYU-Hawaii to earn a 2-0 win Saturday in PacWest action.

FPU concludes its four-game Hawaii road trip with 10 points and a 3-0-1 mark. The Sunbirds move to 6-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in league action, which puts them in sole possession of first place in the PacWest with 10 points. The Seasiders fall to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in conference.

"This is a big win for us and a tremendous road trip to come away with 10 points," said head coach Jaime Ramirez. "BYU-Hawaii is very talented in every position, and we did a great job of containing them offensively. Renato's early goal was huge and made them change their offensive game plan a little bit. Defensively, we got behind the ball early and was able to contain their cuts, craftiness and speed. Everybody worked so hard on the back line and I'm very proud of our effort tonight."

The Sunbirds wasted no time in earning an advantage as Bustamante received a pass from Alvaro Nogales and chipped a shot over the keeper to put FPU up 1-0 in the sixth minute of action. Joey Belzil added to the lead in the 41st minute with his fourth goal of the road trip. Isaiah Asencio set up the play with a pass in the box to a diving Belzil, who slipped a shot to the back post to give the Sunbirds the 2-0 lead.

The back line and goalkeeper Andrew Luis contained the Seasiders' offense in the second half to secure their second consecutive clean sheet and third of the season. Luis made three saves in the win.

BYUH out-shot the FPU 10-5 on the evening, despite the Sunbirds holding a 4-3 advantage with shots on goal. The Seasiders were caught offsides twice on the night.

FPU returns home on Wednesday, October 3 to continue PacWest play against Dominican. The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start at Ramirez Field.
