FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific led for the majority of the match, but visiting Point Loma escaped with a 2-1 double-overtime win Saturday in PacWest action at Ramirez Field.
Â
The Sunbirds had their eight game unbeaten streak snapped with the loss. FPU moves to 7-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in league play, while Point Loma improves to 5-3-1 overall and 4-1 in the PacWest with the win.
Â
"I thought Point Loma made us change our game plan tonight and I was impressed with their style of play" said head coach
Jaime Ramirez. "In these kinds of games, we thought a 1-0 lead would be enough to win the game and we weren't able to sustain it. This game is about consistency and sustainability, and we weren't able to put together a full 90 minutes this time.Â
I felt like we created good opportunities throughout the match, but we weren't able to find the net tonight. "
Â
The Sunbirds scored first in the 21st minute with a goal from
Alvaro Nogales, assisted from
Benjamin Cowdrill and
Martin Kams. FPU held the lead until the 79th minute when the Sea Lions equalized with a goal from Patrice Glaser. Both teams battled into double-overtime until Point Loma's Christopher Tellez headed home a corner to score the golden goal in the 107th minute.
Â
Andrew Luis made four saves in goal for FPU.
Â
FPU out-shot PLNU 19-18 and produced 10 corner kicks to the Sea Lions' 5.
Â
The Sunbirds are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Academy of Art.
