Sunbirds downed by Hawaii Pacific for second time this week

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific was defeated by visiting Hawaii Pacific 63-58 Saturday night in PacWest action. The Sharks earned their second win over the Sunbirds this week and used eight second-half three's to down FPU.
 
The Sunbirds fall to 5-10 overall and 1-7 in PacWest play following the loss, while HPU improves to 11-4, 6-3.
 
The Sharks limited FPU to 36% shooting on the night and forced 19 Sunbird turnovers. HPU scored 20 points off the turnovers. HPU entered the night leading the PacWest in opponent's field goal percentage, holding offenses to 39% shooting per game, and ranked second in scoring defense allowing 63.9 points per contest.
 
The Sunbirds struggled from the start offensively and only managed 16 first-half points. HPU led 18-16 at the intermission. The Sharks turned it on in the second half and earned its largest lead of the night of 15 points with 7:51 remaining before the Sunbirds chipped away at the lead. A pair of free throws from Trevon Clayton cut the deficit to three with 1:40 to go, but the Sharks closed the game out with seven points to earn the 63-58 final.
 
Bobby Barnes scored 16 points for the Sunbirds, while Trevon Clayton added 10 points and 15 rebounds.
 
Justin Long led the Sharks with 18 points and Darry Jones Jr. scored 12.
 
FPU is back in action Thursday, Jan. 22 against BYU Hawaii at home.
